Franz Beckenbauer is generally regarded as the inventor of modern attacking sweeper, winning 103 caps for West Germany and leading Bayern to a hattrick of European Cups. Nicknamed "Der Kaiser", Beckenbauer was admired for a keen positional sense, precise distribution and an attacking flair that made him the focal point of both his club and national team. He successfully adapted his footballing intelligence to management, most notably with West Germany.
