  • 1947 – born in Amsterdam
  • 1965 – makes his debut for Ajax
  • 1966 – wins his first cap for Holland against Hungary
  • 1971 – voted European Footballer of the Year; Ajax win the first of four successive European Cups
  • 1973 – European Footballer of the Year; rejoins Rinus Michels at Barcelona for a world record fee of 922,000
  • 1974 – captains Holland to World Cup final (1-2 versus West Germany) European Footballer of the Year
  • 1978 – announces retirement
  • 1979 – signs for Los Angeles Aztecs
  • 1982 – returns to Ajax as player, then coach
  • 1987 – leads Ajax to win the Cup Winners Cup
  • 1992 – guides Barcelona to claim the European Champions Cup
  • 1994 – Barcelona win fourth successive Spanish Title

A natural goalscorer blessed with superb control, deadly acceleration and remarkable balance, Johan Cruyff was a key figure in the golden age of Dutch football during the 1970s. Scorer of 33 goals in 48 games for Holland. Cruyff smoothly transformed himself into a provider and creator later in his career. As a player, his footballing intelligence was crucial in the development and implementation of "total football" and he successfully transferred his tactical awareness to management with Ajax and Barcelona, his old clubs.
