  • 1915 – born in Hanley, Midlands
  • 1932 – debut for Stoke City
  • 1934 – debut for England versus Wales
  • 1947 – joins Blackpool
  • 1953 – after twice finishing on the losing side, inspires Blackpool to a victorious Cup Final comeback against Bolton ( the "Matthews Final")
  • 1956 – first European Footballer of the Year
  • 1957 – wins last of 54 caps for England against Denmark
  • 1965 – knighted; plays final game for Fulham, aged 50 years and 5 days

Although he won relatively few honours, Sir Stanley Matthews became a household name by virtue of his wonderful balance and skill, which enabled him to create countless scoring opportunities for his teammates. The most famous player of his generation, Matthews was also remarkable for his longevity as a player at the highest level, a tribute not only to his enduring talent but also to his exemplary fitness and dedication.
