A B O U T T H E C L U B The club was founded in 1902 by students as Madrid FC, with the Real (Royal) prefix bestowed at a later date by King Alfonso XIII, Madrid were among the co-founders of the Spanish league and cup competitions, but were truly established as a footballing force by Santiago Bernabeu, who built the stadium that bears his name. During the 1950s Real swept all before them, winning five consecutive European Cups and setting impossibly high standards for their successors. Names such as Puskas, Di Stefano and Gento have entered into football legend, due in no small part to their performances in the famous white shirt. Real's 7-3 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 is still considered to be one of the finest footballing displays of all time. The present team, boasting foreign stars such as Suker, Seedorf and Roberto Carlos alongside local heroes Hierro and Raul, broke Barcelona's recent domestic hegemony last season and look capable of redressing a balance that has long favoured their Catalan rivals. |
