  • 1929 – born in Moscow
  • 1946 – joins Moscow Dynamo ice hockey team as a goaltender
  • 1953 – opting for football, establishes himself as Moscow Dynamo's first-choice goalkeeper
  • 1954 – wins first of 78 caps against Sweden
  • 1956 – is part of the Soviet Union's Olympic gold medal winning team in Melbourne
  • 1959 – wins Soviet Championship with Moscow Dynamo
  • 1960 – wins European Championship, 2-1 against Yugoslavia in the final
  • 1963 – European Footballer of the Year
  • 1964 – runner-up in European Championship, (1-2 versus Spain)
  • 1966 – World Cup semi-finalist
  • 1967 – retires
  • 1968 – receives the Order of Lenin
  • 1991 – Lev Yashin passes away

Nicknamed the "Black Panther" for his acrobatic athleticism and his ability to save seemingly unstoppable shot, Lev Yashin is generally considered to be the greatest goalkeeper of all time. Initially drawn to ice hockey, he switched allegiances to football at 23 years of age, and is said to have over 150 penalty saves to his name. Admired throughout his career for his sportsmanship, Yashin was much loved as an ambassador for football and fairplay.
