  • Remarkably successful manager, resurrecting second division Liverpool to the heights of European success
  • Fruitful playing career as a wing-half with Carlisle United, Preston North End (FA Cup winner in 1938) and Scotland (winning five caps)
  • Began managing in 1949 with Carlisle, Grimsby Town, Workington, and Huddersfield Town before moving to Liverpool FC in December 1959
  • English League championship 1964, 1966, 1973
  • FA Cup titles 1965, 1974
  • UEFA Cup Champion 1973
  • Known for producing home grown youth talent and grooming assistant coaches, he laid the foundations for the continued success of Liverpool FC
  • Died in 1981
